i “disagree”, this song is not the worst song ever written, this song is but a piece of tapestry in the crappy song blanket. songs such as “closing time” were predicated by such hits as “hooked on a feeling” and “achey breaky heart”. in the end they are not works of art but tools of a commercial music enterprise that only continues to grow. a very willful part of me hopes that in the sea of refuse that is top 40 radio there are human beings trying to craft meaningful, good music. However, i also know that after slugging away at the bottom of the industry the golden ring of fame and fortune can look damn appealing. That's typically what i hear when i listen to song's like “closing time” add etc infinite. They took something worth crafting a song about then commercalized it for one reason or another. (The reason may or may not be important but that is a long discussion.) The other side of this wicked coin is a thing that i fear the most as a writer and a producer (hopefully) of good music. What i fear most is that there could quite possibly be (and low i am sure there is) enterprising agents and companies that are designed to follow trends, measure popularity, and then mass produce and package bands and music. (or any other medium for that matter). I know both of the scenarios are true to their own extent. Either way the result is music, as the alchemist so aptly put it, that gives us nothing new.
Now less i should allow my commentary to venture only in the esoterics of motivation let me also point out that there is another disease plagueing the quality of music that is readily available. and this disease is leisure time and “artists” filling the world with “art” that would be better classified as “what id did to kill the time so i posted it on the net.” As society has progressed, more and more people find themselves with extended leisure time. There are literally thousands of way to spend this “extra” time that is created through modern “advancement”. One of the ways to spend leisure time is to create media… all different sorts. When people begin to produce more and more media that is readily available (mainly through advanced technology like the internet) the question of “is this media worth while are?” always seems to come up. With out delving to much into critical theory about what makes art art or literature literature, i have this to say. It used to be (via time constraints and the basic need to eat) that if you were in the industry of producing medium you had to be “good” and “popular”… you could not be popular with out adhearing to what was “good” and if you were not popular you starved. now many people who are considered artists in our modern time starved while they were alive. however, there are a ton of people producing medium right now that should be starving and aren't. Once again a lot of this is objective and subjective criticism and i think it could be hased and re-hashed a million times. However, the questions at hand are “what are the steps to crafting a good song? and “what makes a song good?” While i am not ready to define either question in certain terms i can say this, while there are many great songs that have probably never gotten the popularity they “deserve”, the worst song ever is probably one we have never heard before. Somehow or another semisonic, billy ray cyrus, and other media producing entities create media that people shell out millions of bucks for. Not saying that making millions makes you “good” art, but enough people, or at least one person in the beggining thought that the media was “good” enough to be sold and other people agreed which is why top 40 radio exists.
